   Vexillology is a word meaning the scholarly study of flags, their history and symbolism. It comes from a Latin root, vexillarius, the name of a Roman army standard bearer.  Today official ceremonies of state are conducted by a military color guard.
   The Flag Code, Title 36, approved by the U.S. Congress, covers how to properly display and present the American flag.  The American Legion link truly does it justice:

   Flags of sovereign countries around the world change as geopolitical conditions change.  Bosnia-Herzegovina revised its flag and Rwanda announced it has begun a new design process.
